Roots Honoring the History of Jazz and Swing.png
About the Event

In the course of a weekend, learn to use dance as an art form to express yourself. Then, take a trip to Africa to learn about the culture and the dance that created a foundation for today's Lindy Hop. After a break, take the next day to travel back in time to when Lindy Hop first began and learn about the history of the dance; you will return to the present day to get creative and build your own personal style of swing dancing based on what you've learned.

This event is dedicated to learning African dance, the roots of swing dance and black American dance styles. Having a better understanding of this dance will give you a better understanding of the jazz dance forms we all love. Come learn from African Dance Instructor Damilola Afolabi and a Jazz and Lindy Hop instructor (TBA) about Lindy Hop and vernacular jazz and their roots, and then get creative by bringing the moves, the spirit and the culture of African dancing into your jazz and swing.

Additional announcements will be made soon. Please note that event schedule and class descriptions are subject to change.

Damilola Afolabi (Dami for short) a talented and creative dance instructor from Lagos, Nigeria, who now calls Redding, California, his home. Dami specializes in AfroDance and has a deep love for people, rhythm, movement, and dance. He believes that dance is a powerful form of self-expression. He is passionate about helping his students move freely and express themselves through rhythm and movement.

In addition to his love for dance, Damilola has a passion for creative expression which is why he chose to pursue a degree in Acting. He brings this passion for creative expression to his dance classes, encouraging his students to use dance as a way to express themselves and connect with others.

Damilola's teaching style is fun, energetic, and inclusive. He creates a supportive and non-judgmental environment where everyone, regardless of their skill level, feels welcome to join and express themselves through dance. He believes that dance is not just about learning steps but also about connecting with the music and the culture behind the dance.

He is eager to teach at the Roots workshop and is looking forward to helping each person grow and develop as dancers while also fostering a love and appreciation for cultural exchange and creative expression.
